Jamestown, the First Permanent English Settlement in the Americas
Jamestown was first established as “James Fort” in 1607. It served as the colonial capital from 1619 to 1699, until it was relocated to WIlliamsburg. Jamestown was never rebuilt, and has since become an archaeological site known as Historic Jamestowne.
Jamestown Settlement is a nearby living history museum in the style of colonial Williamsburg, which includes a recreation of James Fort, a Powhatan Native American village, and various indoor and outdoor displays.
Jamestown, along with Yorktown and Williamsburg, is a part of Virginia’s Historic Triangle.
